Before you read too much into it
Can I tell anything if it is only over text?
Some of it. Who starts, who restarts, and whether anything became a specific plan all survive being text-only.
He is shy. Does that change how I read this?
It widens the range rather than raising the score. Shyness makes any reading less certain, in both directions.
Is there a way to know without asking him?
Not reliably. Watching for longer mostly produces more of the same ambiguity.
